Fashion house founded by the stylist Yves Saint Laurent together with Pierre Bergè in 1962, after two years expands the production also to the perfumes. In 1966, through the Rive Gauche boutique, he wanted to popularize pret-a-porter. In 1999 Gucci took over the brand and commissioned Tom Ford to create the pret-a-porter collections, while Saint-Laurent dedicated himself to high fashion until 2002, when he retired due to precarious health conditions. After Tom Ford it was the turn of Stefano Pilati, in 2004, which gave the brand a character closer to French fashion. In 2012 he was succeeded by Hedi Slimane, then replaced in 2016 by Anthony Vaccarello. In the 60s 70s the brand popularized women's and men's safari-style jackets, very high boots and the classic women's tuxedo, born in 1966. Many collections of the maison are inspired by artistic and cultural currents, such as works by Matisse, paintings by Picasso and Pop art. Yves Saint Laurent's style is distinguished by the combination of formal rigor and exotic fabrics. Another distinctive element is the translation of men's clothes into the women's wardrobe, a choice shared also by Coco Chanel.
