Thomas Burberry, apprentice of an important tailor, in 1856, at the age of 21 he opened his first shop in Basingstoke, in England. Fundamental to the success of its brand, the discovery of the "gabardine", in around 1880, a combed thread fabric with a surface marked by well-inclined ribs, suitable for tailoring cuts. In 1912 the origins of the trench-coat lie: the tielocken, model without buttons with belt patented by Burberry and made of gabardine. Thomas Burberry takes up the modeling of the old coats of the British officers, created by himself thirteen years earlier for the War Office, to the Tielocken he adds epaulettes and metal rings, he is born so the trench coat, fully lined by the Check, motif introduced in 1920, characterized by horizontal and vertical lines that cross, today known with the term Tartan, a distinctive element of the brand name. In July 2017 Marco Gobbetti is the new CEO of the company and intends to bring it to a higher market segment. From 12 March 2018 the Italian designer Riccardo Tisci, after 12 years in the French maison Givenchy, is the new creative director of the brand.
